As people in Nigeria marked the country’s 63rd independence day this weekend, members of the Nigerian diaspora gathered at Waverley Elementary School on Saturday to celebrate the holiday Frederick style.

For the past 14 years, the Association of Nigerians in Frederick have put on an annual cultural festival for members of the community. More than 200 people signed up for this year’s Nigerian Festival, according to organizer Yewande Oladeinde.

“It’s about cultural preservation and promotion,” Oladeinde said. “While we’re here acculturating to America, we’re also trying to still preserve our Nigerian culture, especially with our kids who were born here.”
